Plant Signs Frequently Asked Questions
What do you engrave on the signs?
What makes our business unique is that every sign we engrave is made to your specifications. Whatever you would like on the sign (text, location, italics, capital letters, underlining, etc.) is what we will engrave. Up to 10 words are included in the price of each sign. Additional words are $0.25 each word, per sign. If you would like the name of your organization engraved on each sign, those words count in the 10 included words per sign.
What is the proper way to write a scientific name?
While personal preference will take precedence, the following website has some good guidelines.
Can you engrave using fonts other than the standard block font?
Yes. Other fonts are available, such as Serif fonts, cursive, etc. Add $1.00 per sign for other fonts.
How many characters can I put on a line?
The fonts are scalable, so that many words can be engraved on a given line. However, keep in mind that the smaller the font size, the closer an observer will have to get to the sign to read it.
Can you engrave QR Codes?
Yes, for an additional $7.50 per sign.
How long do the signs last?
Physical damage (from animals, falling branches, human kicks, garden hoses, vandalism, etc.) cannot be predicted. The signs hold up well in temperature extremes and are made of UV-resistant materials. Signs left untouched may last many years. We started our business in 1996, and many of the signs from that time that were left undisturbed are still in use today. Signs mounted in our frame holders are protected to a large degree from mechanical damage.
How should I insert the stakes into the ground?
For putting stakes in the ground, moisten the earth first or wait until after rainfall to make the sign holder legs go in more easily. If the ground is rocky, a hole will have to be dug and then backfilled to loosen up the dirt. Do not pound the stakes with a hammer, a rock, or by pushing on the sign plate from the top. Force should only be applied to the holder’s leg itself. If you clamp 1 or 2 strong pairs of vise-grip pliers to the leg of the holder, you can get some additional leverage in working the leg into the ground.
If theft is a concern, a hole can be dug and filled with concrete for a more secure installation.
Is there an alternate method for mounting the sign plates?
The sign plate may be attached to any flat surface, such as a wall, fence, or tree trunk. We sell the upper metal frames for sign holders without legs, if desired. Another option is to attach the plate with screws to a post with a 45º angle cut at the top. Nails are not recommended as the hammer may damage the plate.
Are the signs guaranteed by a warranty?
2 years. Signs that need replacing after 2 years are given a 20% discount. Ask.
Do you supply references?
Yes, ask us for a list of customers near you, and we would be happy to share their contact information.
Do you make signs for other applications?
Yes. We have made signs identifying animals/birds in cages, humorous/gag signs, hotel door # signs, solar panel warning signs, art installation signs, etc. If you can imagine it, we can engrave it.
Can you engrave logos or other graphics?
We can engrave simple line-drawn logos or drawings. We cannot engrave different colors in the graphic. Prices will vary depending on the complexity of the graphics. Ask for a quote.
Can you engrave different-sized and colored sign plates other than what is shown?
Yes. The minimum order is 50 signs or holders. Requesting odd sizes will add about 3 weeks to process your order. Ask for pricing.
How does your discount on pricing work?
The discounts are cumulative over multiple orders. Signs and holders each count separately in calculating the discount. For example, if one year you order 25 signs with 25 holders, the total would be 50, for a discount of 5%. If the following year, you order 25 more signs with 25 holders, your cumulative total would be 100, which would result in a 10% discount the second year.
Do you sell the holders without having to order signs?
Yes, we have many customers who only buy our sign holders. Discounts are the same. We can also sell metal frames without legs. We also sell the frame holders made for material thinner than our 1/8″ thick sign plates. These thinner frames are suitable for your homemade signs made of laminated paper or cardstock.
